Post Op Day 3 – Here comes the crash?

Day three post op has been up and down, but for the most part calm and stress free.

Meg slept through the night and woke up around 7:30 wanting to come up on the bed for a snuggle. Drugged her up with some tramadol and let her nest under the doona cover like she used to as a quad dog.

Things seemed fine, until I offered her breakfast. Not interested at all. I was 95% sure this was because I blended up some of her normal dog food with raw chicken, she has been eating raw chicken by itself for the last few days, but there was a risk that A) she was in too much pain and B) the day 3-5 crash beginning. I’m prepared for that crash but at the same time, I want to keep enjoying a happy Meg for a little longer. I insisted we get her a cheeseburger meat patty for lunch, when she has her rimadyl and needs to eat.

Fortunately it seemed like she was just sulking about dog food and went on enjoying the day. The sun was out and she took up some sun baking.

We even took her to the (very empty) dog park where she sat on my lap, laid in the grass and even had a little roll in the grass – nothing too strenuous. The happiness on her face was amazing, I think the park on a sunny day is her favourite thing.

The morning was topped off with her eating her cheeseburger lunch and happily getting drugged.

The main highlight from the afternoon was taking her out for a pee break, going to pick her up to take her back to our second level apartment, but nope, she wanted to climb those steps herself! Two sets of at least 10 stairs! The first few were almost slips (I was ready to grab her), but after that she had it nailed! Safe to say she is only doing that once a day for now.

She did a fair bit of running between rooms this afternoon as well, to my horror. I enforced bed rest – she is going to be exhausted tomorrow (she already is).

Her shaking has picked up, and the signs of phantom limb pain episodes, and a hell of a lot more sulkiness and sadness has begun. Here comes the crash.

Rest well, Meggymoo!

  1. Sounds like you are very on top of her pain signals, which should help you get through the crash, if it comes for Meg. Moderate her activity – this was major surgery and there will be some pain as she uses new muscles to adjust to her life on three. And if she was cheeseburgers and chicken, for now, I say go for it. Time enough later for kibble.

    1. Seems as if the crash is here, or at least like I thought she did too much yesterday! She woke up crying at 2:30 this morning, drug cycle was ending so we topped her up at 3:00 and she slept soundly until we woke up at 9:00 (thank god for Sunday sleep ins!). Today is a rest day for all of us I think, with yummy bad food, not kibble!

  2. MEG!!! How do you do it? How do you keep getting cuter??? And you do look like you are smiling as you enjoy sunbathing on yijr “throne of squishy softness”!

You are one smart girl! You keep holding out for cheeseburgers and steaks, maybe a bowl of macaroni and cheese too!

Continue to take it really, really easy. The muscles get sore very easily and can make you feel like not moving around much. Bet you can talk your Mom into giving you lots and lots of gentle massages up and down your spine, your neck area, shoulder muscles, etc.

You really, eally are doing well! Continue to celebrate every time some teeny sparkle comes back! Soon you’ll be fullmof sparkling moments to celebrate!!

    Lots of hugs!

    1. Thanks Sally! Your posts and comments always make me smile! Luckily it is another sunny day, so hopefully we can convince Meg to get back on her squishy sun thrown and rest. She is exhausted from yesterday, like I thought.

Massages and sleep for all today. Cheeky little thing has started refusing her peanut butter with hidden drugs, going to have to find something else soft and sticky that she can’t spit it. Damm tramadol being so bitter!

The Meglet shine is there, slowly becoming more shiny, I’m thankful she spent a lot of time sleeping anyway, makes all this rest seem normal.

  3. This is a great update! Goooo Meggy!

Amazing how they just get right back to it, isn’t it? Izzy was ready for stairs LONG before I was ready for her to be. lol

    Thanks for sharing with us!

    1. I am so amazed at how quickly she has picked everything back up! She is determined to jump up on the couches as well, heck no Meg, just wait a few weeks for that!!

  4. What a cutie! Sounds like she’s got the “Tripawd Spoiling” down to a T. It seems the tripawd’s catch on real quick how to wrap us around their paws, and make us spoil them beyond belief – and make us happy to do so. Like the others said, be sure to limit her activity, no matter how glad you are to see her returning to her old behaviour; I made that mistake, and Nitro paid for it. Soon enough she’ll be able to do (almost) all the things she did as a quad. Embrace and celebrate each and every milestone, and give her a hug from us.

    1. Can say that again! It is super hard to try and stop them doing their old activity. I have to keep reminding myself that the more she does now,the less she’ll do next week. Lucky the tramadol is knocking her out a fair bit.
Giving her lots of hugs, from tripawds and their owners everywhere!!
