Ampuversary!

It has been a year! One year ago today we fearfully dropped Meg off at the vet for an amputation, and fortunately the year since has been mostly positive for Meg. I’m feeling very blessed that we got lucky on this one, and that Meg is healthy, happy and enjoying life on three.

I’ve seen too many tripawd’s lose their battles in the last year, and it makes me feel a twinge of guilt and a lot of gratefulness that we’ve had Meg for this year, and fingers crossed a few more years. When I see people lose their tripawd, the dog seems to go downhill fast, healthy and happy one day, and then the next day not eating and sick, and the next day taken to the vet and receive a grim diagnosis. It is a valuable reminder to take every day as a blessing and not to plan too far ahead. Even last week, Meg had a bad day. She woke up cold and shaking, and even once the house warmed up she was in a ball shaking, not moving much. She was slow and sick on her walks and clearly in a lot of pain all day. Even though she was eating, drinking, pooping, and doing all the vital things that suggest “it might not be that bad”, I was still worried we might not see the one year mark after all.

Meg came good though, and last weekend we did a little photoshoot to celebrate the ampuversary! The photos aren’t on my laptop so I can’t spam you, but here is our favourite photo from the day!

You did it Meggymoo! One year into remission, another year and you’ll be in the clear! I’m just happy for each and every day though. Keep going Meglet, you’re a star!

  1. I absolutely LOVE the photo tag 🙂

Miss Izzy would have celebrated two years on three legs a couple of days back. I nearly caught myself feeling sorry about it and then I pushed on to the fact that she proved EVERYONE wrong. When I made the decision to amputate her leg even though she was just about 12, the doctors felt it would give me some time with her, but less than a year. My girl sure showed them! I got almost TWO extra years with her and I’m sure that, if I hadn’t needed to put her on prednisone for the MCT she developed, she would still be here now.

So yes, live every moment with Meggymoo to the absolute fullest! Celebrate whenever you can! I know it can be hard to do when you’ve got work, family and other life obligations, but that is my only regret. I wish I’d done more with Izzy when she was still “young” and three legged, not that I think SHE had any regrets … she was damned happy to get two meals a day and snacks, let alone all of my attention!

I’m so glad to get to wish you a very “hoppy” ampuversary, Meg!

    1. You’re right, celebrating that extra time is much more important than feeling sad and sorry! Grief is important but so are celebrations. It sucks that Izzy didn’t make it to two years, but your extra time with her was important.

Other peoples loss is such a good reminder to treat Meg (and her sis, Dotti) with all the love and attention in the world, especially while they have the energy for two walks a day, play time, adventures. It is hard to think they won’t have that energy forever and one day will just want to sleep all day. I’ll be sure to spoil Meg a hell of a lot tonight!

    1. Thank you Sally! Your comments always make me smile! I’m thrilled you enjoyed my other blog posts and caught up on them all, the truth about tripawds one has to be my favourite, I really hope new tripawd owners have seen it and taken some comfort in it.
